Project Management

The project management series covers core skills including planning a project, budgeting, communication and risk management. The NETg courses map to the Association for Project Management's 'Body of Knowledge' and completion of the nine modules will prepare students for the APMP exam.

This curriculum will map to the Association of Project Management's (APM) Body of Knowledge and the APMP syllabus. The learning objectives will directly address learner requirements for passing this exam.

Project managers who are responsible for managing all aspects of a project from start to finish, for managing multiple projects, and for maximizing utilisation of resources to achieve the project goals.

1. The Fundamentals

2. The Project Management Process

In The Project Management Process, you will learn how successful project management involves an integration of skills within overlapping project stages. By delineating a process, as this course does, learners can appreciate the importance of key milestones and how they impact on the success of a project.

  • To identify the information to include in a project proposal template.
  • To explain the purpose and content of a project plan.
  • To explain the reasons for requiring change control.

3. Project Initiation

Project Initiation teaches how a project should begin. Building from the importance of identifying the business case that underlies the project, the course then looks at the different types of plan a good project manager will put in place to ensure successful initiation.

  • To define and describe the responsibilities of those involved in the business plan
  • To discuss and describe the main breakdown structures
  • To explain the reasons for requiring change control
  • To demonstrate understanding of the fundamental relationships between the breakdown structures

4. Project Planning and Quality

In Project Planning and Quality, you will learn the importance of effective planning and reporting as well as the fundamentals of project configuration management and project quality assurance.

  • To outline the kinds of plan the project manager will need to make.
  • To explain the purpose of common quality techniques.
  • To explain the requirements for configuration management.
  • To explain the differences between quality planning, quality control, and quality assurance.
  • To define the terms configuration control, configuration identification, configuration status accounting, configuration auditing.

5. Time and Resource Management

In Project Management and Time and Resource Management, you will learn about time and resource management and scheduling. Projects must be tracked to ensure they meet deadlines and such tools as activity lists, network diagrams, Gantt charts, bar charts and others are taught here for this purpose. A project manager's resources must be clearly identified and their use maximised so the final part of this course lays its emphasis there.

  • Identify the characteristics of a network diagram.
  • Identify the components of a Gantt chart.
  • Identify how to plan resource specification.
  • Identify the steps to manage project resources.

6. Risk, Health and Safety

In Risk, Health and Safety, you will learn about risk management and a risk management process. Risk assessment and risk calculation are also covered here, as are the questions of how to respond to and control project risks. Finally, this course touches on the importance of such things as the Employers Duty of care and health and safety management and reporting.

  • Select the methods for identifying risks.
  • Identify the steps for qualitative risk assessment.
  • Identify the methods for responding to project risks.
  • Identify guidelines for adhering to the Employer's Duty of Care.

7. Project Costs and Budgets

In Project Costs and Budgets, you will learn how to approximate project costs as well how to estimate them. This course covers the fundamentals of cost budgeting for projects, including SCurves and how to refine a project budget. You will also learn about the Cost Performance Index, earned value management and variance analysis.

  • Identify reasons for estimating project costs.
  • Identify steps to refine the project budget.
  • Identify how to determine project payback.
  • Identify guidelines to control project costs.
  • Identify how to use Earned Value calculations.

8. The Project Team

In The Project Team, you will learn teach the fundamentals of teams, team building, teamwork and team leadership. The project manager's role within the team is a crucial one and it is vital that the project manager understands what motivates people and how they grow and develop as part of a team. Building on the theories of such eminent thinkers as Maslow and Belbin, this course concludes with an investigation into the nature of, and suggestions for the control of, team conflict.

  • Identify the stages of team development.
  • Identify the purpose of project teams.
  • Identify how to motivate individuals.
  • Identify guidelines for developing team commitment.
  • Identify the main causes of conflict within a project team.

9. Contracts, Procurement and Closure

In Project Management: Contracts, Procurement and Closure, you will learn the nature and importance of project contracts and procurement. Project managers must understand such things as contract types and the value of procurement planning because they very often find themselves negotiating with contractors. The course includes a process for soliciting contractors/vendors and it also looks at how contracts may be closed or terminated. Finally, just as contracts are closed, so too are projects themselves. The successful project manager will initiate a handover meeting and hold post-project reviews to evaluate success and this course teaches how to make project closure a success.

  • Identify the steps involved in procurement planning.
  • Identify steps in the process for soliciting contractors.
  • Identify steps involved in contract close-out.
  • Identify guidelines for holding a post-project review.
